Our expertise in hospitality design informs every detail, creating immersive and memorable experiences that connect people to place.

About
DesignAgency was established in 1998 by Allen Chan, Anwar Mekhayech, and Matt Davis, three friends united by a commitment to create emotionally impactful spaces that bring people together and that foster distinctive, memorable experiences. From the beginning, DesignAgency broke the mold of conventional interior design firms, driven by a holistic approach to shaping every touch point of the experiences its spaces offer.
Today, the firm consistently sits at the top of Interior Design magazine’s Hospitality Giants list, globally respected for its work with clients spanning luxury icons like Four Seasons, Ritz-Carlton and St. Regis and cultural innovators like Soho House and Momofuku Restaurant Group. DA extends the hospitality ethos far beyond hotels and restaurants, delivering exceptional environments in entertainment venues—from 200-person concert halls to 20,000-seat arenas—as well as workplaces, multifamily residential buildings, members clubs, spas, and beyond. The firm comprises a global team of more than 130 creative, entrepreneurial design-thinkers, all of whom contribute to a body of work that transcends categories and defies boundaries.
Established and headquartered in Toronto, Canada, DesignAgency also has studios in Washington, D.C., Barcelona and Singapore, serving a global roster of clients. In 2025, the company launched DesignAgency Collective, the parent company that sits atop DesignAgency, along with two newer sister companies: DA Ventures, an investment and partnerships arm; and StudioDA, which focuses on branding and graphic design.

Our Story
In 1998, Allen Chan, Anwar Mekhayech, and Matt Davis teamed up to launch Spaha, a bistro-café inside Grad House, a University of Toronto building designed by Pritzker-Prize winner Thom Mayne.

The project quickly won global media attention and critical success. It established a blueprint for a studio driven by creative, entrepreneurial design-thinkers, whose unconventional backgrounds—in architecture, landscape architecture and engineering—would soon inform a body of work that would transcend categories and defy boundaries.
Building off the momentum of Spaha, the trio established themselves as the go-to designers for zeitgeist-defining spaces in Toronto’s restaurant and nightlife scene. As the firm’s profile rose, partnerships with visionary founders like chef David Chang, of Momofuku, and Nick Jones, of Soho House, enabled the company to establish a global footprint, opening a studio in Barcelona in 2013, with DC following soon after. DA Singapore is the company’s newest outpost; the studio there was established in 2026.
Nearly 30 years on, the three founders remain close friends and collaborators, setting the direction for DesignAgency and participating actively in virtually every project. As they cultivate a new generation of leaders at the company, they are also expanding focus to DesignAgency Collective, the parent company that sits atop DesignAgency, the flagship; DA Ventures, the investment and partnerships arm; and StudioDA, which focuses on branding and graphic design.

How We Work
Our process has been refined over nearly three decades of work across hotels, restaurants, residences, entertainment venues, and commercial projects. Every project starts with an in-depth investigation into each client’s business, as we seek to understand their brand, their goals, and the opportunity in front of us. We leverage these findings to develop a concept for the project, establishing a vision for the project that pushes the boundaries of what’s possible. Our imaginative thinking is bound by a rigorous commitment to process, ensuring projects move efficiently from concept to completion. At every stage, we hold ourselves to the highest standards of quality, precision and professionalism.
